Don the eel scientist

Don the eel man

Hello everyone,

Today a eel scientist named Don, he works at the National institute of water and atmosphere. He knows most about eels in New Zealand. He taught us lots of facts.

  • They eat baby birds and little ducklings.
  • At night eels can absorb oxygen from their skin.
  • Scientists take out mainly baby eels ear bone to see their age and they know by how much rings are on their ear bone.
  • Eels have very good smelling (etc, if you put blood in a deep river an eel at the very bottom or very far away can smell it).
  • Female eels need to be big to hold lots of eggs.
  • Long fin eels hide a lot in the day and come out at night.
  • Many many years ago eels lived in sea.

Green hat day!

Friday 15 march

Happy St Patrick's week everyone!
This week hasn't been much of a busy week for me. And on Wednesday I was off school. This week for RE we have been learning about South Sudan, I learnt that people in South Sudan are very poor and their government is very poor. And they cant afford to look after their waterways because they don't have enough money so people in south sudan has to walk miles for water.

For maths we have been doing number talks, for number Mrs O'Neill puts a maths equation on the board. If we have an answer we do a thumbs up, If we have two answers we do 2 fingers like pointing but with your thumb up too. If you have solved it differently you just put your hand up with all your fingers up. If you did the same working out as someone else you put your pinkie and your thumb up, and if you have something to say you just put your pinkie up.

And for reading we are learning about pollution, and doing activities.

Here's a photo of us in our green hats,

weekly update friday 8 march

Good evening,

This week has been very busy, as we've learned a lot of stuff about water and Eels. the highlight of this week for me was visiting the Eels on Thursday. My favourite part of my trip, or my favourite activity of my trip was touching the Eels and seeing them out of the water. And I loved holding the whitebait.

For maths we started doing number talks, number talks is when the teacher writes a maths equation on the board and we have to think of a way to solve it in our head and then do a thumbs up if you've got a answer.

And for reading we've been learning about pollution, I know a bit about pollution cause I did a speech about last year.

Thank you,

Liam.
